Demetri Argyropoulos, Founder & CEO
In the role of Chief Executive Officer, Demetri leads strategy, performance, implementation and corporate governance of Avant Global.
Demetri is highly regarded in the global business community for his proven track record in building successful relationships. By establishing value, commonalities and rapport, Demetri creates an atmosphere of trust that enables relationships to flourish. Demetri performs a vital role in helping to succinctly negotiate and close deals between parties.
Since founding Avant Global, Demetri and his partners have been involved in forging relationships, creating opportunities, and generating over $15 billion in value creation across a range of projects and businesses. He has been the catalyst for successfully originating, co-founding, or seeding over 50 new companies, across a variety of industries ranging from medical devices to Internet advertising.
Demetri is a cofounder of Owl BioMedical (recently acquired by German multi-national Miltenyi Biotec) and on the advisory boards of Juggle Labs, Sword Diagnostics, bSpot, TGZ Capital, and Ripple.com.
In addition to his business interests, Demetri’s has raised tens of millions of dollars for charity working with numerous multi-national foundations, charities and non-government organizations including the Clinton Foundation Global Initiative, Promitos, the Santa Barbara Historical Society, 1199 Foundation, Lotus Land Foundation, American Lung Association, Muscular Dystrophy Foundation, Westmont College, CALM, Unity Shop, United Way, Habitat for Humanity, Marymount School, Santa Barbara Symphony, American Hellenic Institute, and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. He is a member of the National Hellenic Society, YPO-WPO International, Milken Institute Young Leaders Circle, Tiger 21, L100, the Harvard Business School Alumni Organization, and the California Republican Advisory Council. He is also serving as an Engagement Officer on the Executive Committee of the Global Diplomacy Network.
In 2016 in recognition of his achievements and humanitarian actions, Demetri was inducted into the Order of Merit of Savoy, an order of knighthood bestowed by the Royal House of Savoy, the last Kings of Italy. Demetri was also the recipient of the 2010 Gusi Peace Prize for achievements, ideals and values. He is an honorary Naval Aviator, has been recognized as one of the ‘Top 40 business leaders under 40’ by the Pacific Coast Business Times, and was named as one of ‘Greek America’s Forty Under 40 Class of 2014.’ He was also awarded the 2003 National Leadership Award and the 2003 Business Man of the Year Award by the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Demetri graduated from Westmont College, studied at the American University in Washington, D.C. and Georgetown University ‘s American Government and Foreign Policy program, as well as being a graduate of the Exponential Technologies Executive Program at Singularity University. He is also an alumni of Harvard Business School, where he graduated from the three year Owner/President Management program (OPM) and is a current member of the Harvard Business School Association of Southern California.
Scott K. Mullen, Senior Business Advisor
Scott Mullen serves as Senior Business Advisor to Avant Global, advising and consulting on the firm’s investments, corporate strategy, client relationships and operational governance.
Prior to working with Avant Global, Scott’s Wealth Management Services career has been spent primarily working with ultra-high-net worth entrepreneurs, families, and private foundations on complex issues of investment management and multi-generational planning.
Scott’s 30 year investment career began with Drexel Burnham Lambert in Beverly Hills, CA in 1986 and continued with Sutro & Co. where Scott spent several years on the bond trading desk. Scott spent over eleven years with Salomon Smith Barney, in Los Angeles, California, where he was Senior Vice President of Investments and Senior Portfolio Manager.
Moving to Austin, Texas in 2001, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer of MFI Capital, a single family office specializing in asset management across a broad range of investment classes in both the public and private sectors.
Scott most recently moved back to Los Angeles where he was Partner for several different billion dollar national RIA firms, opening and operating their California offices while also serving on the firms’ Investment Committees and advising families on asset allocation, portfolio construction, and wealth and tax planning.
Scott has served on the boards of the MFI Foundation, Advisory Councils for Fidelity Investments Family Office Service Group and the University of Virginia National Committee on University Resources. Scott also served on the Board of Directors for the Austin Chapter of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) as Membership Chair. He remains a current member of YPO-WPO International and is also a current member of the Harvard Business School Association of Southern California.
Scott received a BA degree from the University of Virginia and is an alumni of Harvard Business School, where he graduated from the three year Owner/President Management program (OPM). Scott and his wife, Terri, have been married for 27 years and have four children.
Thomas J. Carroll, CIO & COO- Chief Investment Officer & Chief Operating Officer
Thomas J. Carroll serves as Avant Global’s Chief Investment Officer, where he leads investment strategy, develops synergies for applied compounding relationship development, portfolio company management, and research through a catalyst focused lens to enhance the value propositions of all activities within the company. Thomas’ process begins with an intuitive approach which he has built over the years of understanding successful entrepreneurs’ inherent intricacies to explore disruptive ideas and ascertain their value, as well as address potential headwinds. Additionally, Thomas uses a “Learn, Acquire, and Partner” approach to build an ecosystem of symbiosis that can incorporate and leverage the innovative capacity of new technologies created in startups and other enterprises.
Carroll joined Avant Global in May 2013, and previously served as the firm’s Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operations Officer. In these dual roles, Carroll was charged with the management of the holding company’s overall financial operations, investment due diligence and strategic vision. Carroll has played a vital, ongoing role in the company’s continued expansion. He is also responsible for developing many of the business’s now central strategic processes that have allowed the company to rapidly grow and diversify.
Heather Dalton, Vice President & Chief Relationship Officer
Heather Dalton serves as Vice President and Chief Relationship Officer for Avant Global.
In this role, she assists with the management of our client relationships, as well as the implementation of overall governance and strategy for Avant Global.
Prior to joining our team, Heather spent over 15 years at Dell Inc. Most recently she served as Financial Analyst with Investor Relations, and previously held roles in the Office of the CFO and in the Product Group.
Jessica Holmes, Director of Operations
Jessica Holmes serves as Avant Global’s Director of Operations. Prior to joining the Avant Global team Holmes spent over a decade working in the retail and financial services industry.
Holmes began her career in the financial services industry at Riverside, LLC in 2004. Reporting directly to the company’s founder, Holmes assisted with day-to-day management of company until it was successfully acquired in 2014 by an industry leader in second hand valuables.
Following this acquisition, Holmes was promoted to the role of Regional Supervisor. Working directly with upper management to develop and implement company-wide processes and strategies, Holmes was responsible for financial results and P&L management within her region of East Tennessee. She was also charged with planning, assigning, and directing all operational tasks in multiple stores located within that region. As a driven leader within the company, she became known for her ability to develop strong teams focused on delivering value, exceeding goals, and achieving success.
Holmes lived in the Knoxville, Tennessee area before moving to Santa Barbara. She attended East Tennessee State University where she earned her Bachelors of Business Administration.
Fanis Christodoulou, Business Development Associate
Fanis Christodoulou serves as business development advisor at Avant Global. An agronomist who has worked with food companies in Greece and the Mediterranean region on product development, Christodoulou’s focus at Avant Global is to detect and develop business opportunities worldwide for the company’s consumer products arm.
Christodoulou’s vast knowledge of producers, producing methods, and nutrition provide him with a unique foresight into the food sector and its technologies. After attending the Agricultural University of Athens, where his studies focused on agronomy, sustainable farming methods and nutrition values, Christodoulou created one of the first organic goji berries farms in Europe. He organized and managed Farmers Republic, the first private farmers market in Greece, and was responsible for gathering the highest quality products for distribution and sale at the market over a span of 3 years, during which he met with over 500 producers. In that period, Fanis gathered over 2000 organic products, many traditional with unique value. Christodoulou was also the driving force behind Farmer Republic’s distinguished line of premium food products with limited and numbered production.
Christodoulou has also worked as a project manager for various startup companies in Greece.
Cory Klippsten, Venture Capital
Cory Klippsten is a growth strategy advisor for technology startups and venture capital firms. He’s operated as a C-level startup exec, raised multiple rounds of venture capital from top investors, and worked for Google, McKinsey, Microsoft and Morgan Stanley. He holds an MBA in Entrepreneurship, Finance and International Business from the University of Chicago.
Cory grew up in San Francisco and Seattle, split 15 years between New York and Chicago, and now lives in Los Angeles with his wife and young daughter. His interests include basketball, tennis, history and travel (Istanbul and Barcelona are favorites, but anywhere on the Mediterranean will do).
Meghan Powers, Corporate Communications Director
Meghan Powers is Senior Account Manager at Pace Public Relations. Meghan has an extensive background as a TV news producer and writer. She has served as a booker and segment producer for various top-rated national news programs, including FOX News Channel’s FOX & Friends and CNBC’s Fast Money. Most recently, Meghan was the lead Interview Producer for Al Jazeera America’s Real Money with Ali Velshi. At FOX News Channel, she traveled for the network’s coverage of major news stories, including Hurricane Katrina, the Sago mining accident, and the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. Meghan is currently working on a Master’s in Strategic Communication at American University in Washington, DC. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Denison University in Granville, OH.
Nelson Cury, Venture Associate
Nelson Cury serves as Venture Associate at Avant Global. As Venture Associate, he is responsible for developing and maintaining strategic partnerships, pursuing new business opportunities, and conducting various research projects. Nelson also directly assists the Chief Information Officer with his daily projects and due diligence.
Nelson was an intern at Avant Global in 2017. In this role, he spearheaded various research projects for the firm, ranging from marketing and big data to the blockchain ecosystem. As the fourth generation of his family owned business, Nelson tapped into his background to assist the Avant Global team in developing strategic partnerships between family-owned companies. He also helped to establish a Developing Nations project at the firm, which resulted in access to new international opportunities that have driven growth of Avant Global’s network.
Nelson is currently a full-time student at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2018. As a Sociology major, he has completed two big data analytics projects, using sociological methods to qualitatively analyze societal trends.
Nelson, a Music minor (and producer in his free time), is passionate about the arts, and has firsthand experience with the creative process. Prior to joining Avant Global, he was an intern at Atraves TV, an art collective that focuses on understanding, accelerating, and perfecting the creative process. At Atraves, Nelson learned a “5 step method” for methodically turning creative ideas into finished products that he utilizes in working with Avant Global’s clients.
Yiqi Shen, Intern
Yiqi Shen is an intern at Avant Global, where she is responsible for bookkeeping, as well as contributing to research projects led by the CIO’s office. Shen will graduate from Westmont College in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Business. A native of Shanghai, China, Shen serves as the President of the Global International Student Association at Westmont. Previously, Shen spent two summers as an intern at Zenith, an insurance company.
