Our feet take a lot of abuse. According to WiseGeek, the average person will walk 100,000 miles in their lifetime. So, in order to get to and from, not to mention meet the recommended 10,000 steps a day for optimal health, it’s important to make sure that our feet are cared for. Over the years, local convenience and drug stores have carried a variety of insoles in order to provide more support and comfort. However, support and comfort needs range from person to person due to one’s daily lifestyle. SOLS, a New York City based startup, aims to bring the technology of 3D printers to the orthotics market.

One’s daily routine can vary drastically. Going from your morning run, to your job, to daily errands, to occasional nighttime events take a toll on one’s feet, especially when you consider that these activities, usually, require a change in footwear. SOLS, by utilizing 3D printing and mobile technologies, wants you to live your life without our footwear holding us back. With the help of an iPad, SOLS creates 3-D custom orthotics. The company’s ExoSOLS are customized and ordered online. Through an app, photos are taken of one’s feet in order in order to provide measurements, a model and, in the end, custom orthotics made with the company’s proprietary polymer, Flexxon.

With a custom product priced at $99 that includes a 30-day test run, SOLS has captured the attention of the lifestyle, health, and tech worlds. The company has received an impressive amount of media coverage, having been covered by major media outlets and publications, such as WIRED, Shape, New York Magazine, and Inc. Furthermore, Kegan Schouwenburg, CEO of SOLS, was featured in Inc’s 2015 30 Under 30 list.

The on-demand market economy has taken the business world by storm, giving birth to a number of innovative startups across a number of markets. Thanks to a well reviewed product and simple ordering platform, SOLS makes it possible for a custom wellness product to be easily ordered and delivered to anyone from the mobile millennial to the vacationing retiree.
